Restoring an image
ImgCrisp copies the original full-size file of every image into wp-content/uploads/.imgcrisp-backups/ before it changes anything. The first original is never overwritten by later runs.
Restore one image
- Go to ImgCrisp, then Optimization Report, and click the image’s row.
- Press Restore original. ImgCrisp explains what will happen.
- Press Confirm restore.
The backed-up original is copied back, the WebP, AVIF and fallback files ImgCrisp made are removed, and WordPress rebuilds the image’s sizes from the original. The backup itself stays where it is.
The image is then Pending. It isn’t optimized again until you press Re-optimize or run Bulk Optimize.
Restoring is one image at a time. There is no restore-everything button yet.
Restoring an upscaled image
An AI upscale switches every post that shows the image over to the upscaled file. Restoring the image doesn’t switch those posts back. They will show a missing image until you edit them and pick the image again. Restore an upscaled image only when you’re ready to fix those posts.
When a restore can’t run
- No backup. If Keep backups of originals was off when the image was optimized, there is nothing to restore from.
- An upscale is still on its way. Wait until its result has arrived.
- The image is being worked on. Try again in a moment.
- Permissions. You need permission to edit that image.
If you remove the plugin
Deleting ImgCrisp removes its report and settings, but leaves your images, the WebP and AVIF files, and the backup folder on disk. The one-click restore goes with the report, so restore anything you want back before deleting the plugin. After that, the originals are still in the backup folder and can be copied back by hand.
