Settings

Go to ImgCrisp, then Settings. You need to be an administrator. Changes apply to images optimized from then on; images already done keep their files until you re-optimize them.

Output formats and quality

Setting Default What it does
Generate WebP On Makes a WebP version of every size.
Generate AVIF On Makes an AVIF version of every size. Smaller than WebP, slower to make. At least one of the two stays on.
JPEG quality 82 Quality of recompressed JPEGs, from 1 to 100.
WebP quality 80 Quality of WebP versions.
AVIF quality 50 Quality of AVIF versions.
PNG compression level 9 How hard PNGs are compressed, from 0 to 9. PNG compression never loses detail.
Max dimension 2560 The longest side, in pixels, of the full-size image. Larger originals are scaled down; the backup keeps the full original.
AVIF effort 4 Higher makes smaller AVIF files more slowly, from 0 to 9.

PNGs also get a lighter fallback automatically: a JPEG for photo-like PNGs, and a compact PNG for transparent ones.

Behaviour

Setting Default What it does
Optimize new uploads automatically Off Sends each new image to the service as soon as WordPress has made its sizes. See below.
Processing speed Gentle How long a failed image waits before its next try: 5 minutes on Gentle, 1 minute on Normal, 15 seconds on Turbo.
Keep backups of originals On Copies each original before changing it. Restoring needs it, so leave it on.
Smart delivery On Serves WebP and AVIF to browsers that support them, and the lighter fallbacks to everything else. Off, ImgCrisp still makes the files, but your pages keep using the JPEG and PNG files.
Scanner display width 1200 The width the Image Scanner and Upscale scan assume for an image when the page doesn’t say.
Assumed featured-image display width 1200 The width the Upscale scan assumes for featured images, doubled for high-resolution screens.

Optimize new uploads automatically is off on a new install, so nothing you upload is sent to the service until you choose. Switch it on and each new image is optimized right after WordPress makes its sizes. Leave it off and new images wait for your next Bulk Optimize run. Sites that already had an API key saved before this setting arrived keep optimizing new uploads, as they did before; switch it off here if you prefer.

Exclusions

Setting What it does
Excluded MIME types File types Bulk Optimize leaves alone, comma separated, such as image/gif.
Excluded attachment IDs Specific images Bulk Optimize leaves alone, by ID, comma separated.

Exclusions apply to Bulk Optimize. With Optimize new uploads automatically on, a new upload of an excluded type is still optimized.

Health snapshots

Share daily health snapshots with ImgCrisp support is off unless you switch it on. When on, the plugin sends a short daily summary of versions, queue state and image counts, so we can spot a problem without asking for access to your site. It never sends your images or your settings. The privacy page lists everything in it.

Support

Download diagnostics saves a file you can send us instead of site access. See Troubleshooting.
